Tobias Becker (D), collaboration with
Alex Gross (D) - The Raft of the Medusa
Starting point for this work will be the picture of the “The Raft of the Medusa”, illustrated in the painting of the same title by French painter Théodore Géricault in 1816. The painting is based on a true story of the naval frigate “Medusa” that ran aground and sunk on it’s way to Senegal. To escape the crew managed to build an improvised raft using leftovers and fragments of the ship. In the weeks before they got rescued the crew endured starvation dehydration madness and cannibalism. Only a few men survived. The painting shows the last moment of the crew’s desperate struggle for survival. In a sculpural adaptation the artists refer to the dramatic choreography inherent in the painting. The intention is to start a fertile discussion on physical and virtual spaces of experience (Erfahrungsräume) illuminating it’s potentials and shortcomings.
